Do you feel tired and lethargic all the time? Do you have a list of things that you would do, if only you had more energy? Well, part of the fault may rest with your diet. After all, food is fuel, but the wrong food is well – not fuel! Here are six types of food that are zapping your energy. Most of them also cause you to put on weight, so you’re better off without them anyway!
All of these foods are loaded with sugar. You’re probably wondering why sugar is bad for your energy levels – doesn’t it give you energy? The truth is, unlike complex carbs like whole grains, which the body can break down slowly, the body digests simple sugars very quickly, since it looks for the easiest source of energy it can find. This causes your blood sugar levels to spike, but the spike is always followed by a crash, which leaves you tired and drained.
Coffee is healthy, but only if it’s black or with milk. Coffee that’s loaded with sugar, cream and artificial flavours is not a good idea. Caffeine itself does give you energy, but it messes with your circadian rhythm and affects your sleep, which could leave you tired the next day.
Soft drinks contain loads of sugar, chemicals and artificial colours. The sugar zaps your energy levels, while the chemicals strip the calcium from your bones and cause a number of health problems, including cancer. Diet soft drinks are no better, since they contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame, which has over 92 different side effects.
These are all made with flour (maida), which is a carbohydrate that has been refined to the extent that it is a very simple sugar, which the body can absorb very quickly. Your blood sugar levels spike and crash, leaving you exhausted! Watch out for foods like sandwiches, subs and pizzas, since they contain a lot of white bread.
You’ve probably noticed that after eating lots of fried food, you don’t have the energy to do anything and just want to take a nap. Well, that’s not surprising in the least! Your digestive system has to work very hard to process all the greasy fat in these foods, leaving you with no energy to do anything else.
Fast food is loaded with grease, and very often chemicals as well, which the body takes time to digest.
Red wine is considered to be one of the healthiest forms of alcohol, and it is, but it also has natural sedative abilities. Limit your intake to about one glass a day – that’s the right amount for good heart health as well.
